"Families are the Reason…" was designed to inspire and inform families of children with special needs and the professionals who serve them.
"Families are the Reason…" puts Title V in historical context as part of the Social Security Act of 1935—a program to help mothers and children, and its expansion to include children with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Until the 1970's, chronically ill children and children with disabilities routinely lived in institutions. Families often found their role quite limited. This video acknowledges that difficult past and emphasizes the current role of families and professionals working together to build family-centered, community-based, coordinated systems of care. Dr. Merle McPherson, Chief of the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Care Needs, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, leaves us with the challenge to assure that the lessons learned by families and professionals about caring for children with special needs are effectively integrated into the managed health care environment of the future.
"Families are the Reason…" was produced by the Institute for Child Health Policy, an Institute of the State University System of Florida with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau (Cooperative Agreement MCU-125090 and Grants MCJ-127413, MCJ-129346, and MCJ-127043).
